The author, Vivian Yung Chow, was born and raised in Lismore, NSW, the son of a local businessman who had migrated from southern China and settled in the district. Vivian spent some years in Sydney in association with other local writers, contributing to a Sydney literary journal, Readers and Writers Weekly. However, like many Chinese Australians of his generation, he wished to contribute to China, which was undergoing profound change at the time. He and his brother therefore headed to Hong Kong and Shanghai, where their English skills and limited (or non-existent) Chinese allowed them to find work, usually with English-language newspapers.
