Douglas Lam, March 2023 “... people told me the colour [of jade] would be enhanced and that it carries special power to ward off evil spirits after seeing the light of day again. Some people in the past would put a jade cicada in the mouth of a deceased person. When the skeletal remains are exhumed, the cicada would be of special value. Cicadas died in the soil, but new generations arise from the soil. If good provenance is given, burial jade can fetch good prices. Those in the exhumation trade are known to pocket them when the hiring party is not watching.
